Hubert Welch Memorial Page
(aka "Hube")
There once was a need for a daytime "guaranteed driver" for Co.1.
It was a major event for LVFC - a "paid" driver" to ensure the apparatus went out the door in an emergency. Who better to ensure that happened other than Hube! He was a career mechanic in Fairfax Fire Rescue - there wasn't a single piece of emergency apparatus that he hadn't fixed when broken, or kept in service with all the needed maintenance. When the chance came to return to LVFC (he was a volunteer before he went to Fairfax) Hubert was the first in the door!

Hubert
used to work for Joe Grehan (M&G Motors) on S. King St. before he went to Fairfax F/R. Joe would become his father-in-law when Hubert married Pat Grehan. His family would grow and so did Hubert's history as one of the BEST MECHANICS. He started with Joe, Bob Pierpoint and Howard Leigh, when a mechanic was a "volunteer" and the equipment would need repair and service. Many a day would find Hubert, Bob, Joe, Howard, Nelson Downs, Buddy Carr, and many more who made SURE we could get the equipment on the road!
The daily routine would become an icon of LVFC Station 1 - coffee in the morning, a sit down discussion of stories, ideas, complaints, comments, "butt chewing" (if you needed it), from Mr. Hube AND Tom Donohoe.  Reminders of what happened "down country" in the big city area would often set the tone for the discussions and what was happening to Loudoun!
The latest recognition of Hubert's dedication and love for the Fire Service was placed in service on Saturday evening, Jan. 12, 2008. One of 2 matched Seagrave twin pumpers were "pushed" into service (see Photo album below). The bell on the wagon is dedicated to Hubert - the pumper a sign of the excellence of our apparatus and the quality of protection given the citizens by Company 1 - LVFC.
Below a few pictures of Hubert in his favorite operational modes...  enjoy them as much as we enjoyed and miss Hubert.
