Lt. JOHN C. CARR, JR. Memorial Page

Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company

&

Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department

A fellow Loudoun County High School (LCHS) Graduate, a friend, a husband, a father, a teacher, and most of all, a true man among men...

John and I grew up together in a small town where everyone knew everyone - His Mom and Dad were top notch people - but that's what Leesburg used to be all about - family, friends, neighbors, a great place to grow up and develop friendships, and even meet that 1 person you always thought existed.

John met that 1 person, and then married that wonderful woman of his life -  a class of '66 class LCHS graduate -  and Sandy became the wonderful Mom to her daughters, and John the loving husband and father.

John followed in his Dad's footsteps and learned the skills of heavy truck driving. He became a junior firefighter with Leesburg VFC, an awesome driver, and a great officer when I was Chief.  John and Bradly K. held the first Sgt postions we had created in Co.1 to enhance our officer corps. And then the day would come that he became a firefighter recruit in Fairfax County Fire Department. He would be the Fairfax Firefighter of the year, become a part of the elite T.R.O.T. team, and promote to Lt. But we lost John in the prime of life - a victim of a brain tumor.

John was a Virginia Department of Fire Programs Adjunct Instructor, just like me, and we taught many schools and many firefighters together - I'll never forget John and I going up the 100ft Seagrave Tiller to bring down a "frozen to the rails" recruit!  John was the ULTIMATE in Ropes and Knots and being a "truckie". Our current "straight" truck is dedicated in his honor. But John was like me: tillerman is the place to be! What a unique position! (Only REAL ladder trucks bend in the middle!)

The fire service lost a top-notch instructor, a brother in the battle against fire, a family man, and, most of all, a dear friend.

Keep checking for the annual "John's Jamboree" - I will post it here!

A chance to make money for a great cause - "The Brain Cancer Foundation" - a dance held annually at the "Flame Room" of Company 1 - Leesburg VFC - his home away from home - an event created and held in his honor. Help fight the terrible loss of lives to tumors.

Music is by Brandy Stills Band! http://www.brandystills.com/Home.htm

Please come out and support John and those who loved him!

A Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship in John's honor is giving each year to an institution for a student to attend college and research during summer months. Sponsored by the American Brain Tumor Association. Last year it was at the University of California - San Francisco.

Below are the memories of John in some of his grand moments - as life led him through the world and all who knew him, loved him, and miss him!

Photos are still being added periodically - keep checking in for the latest on John's work after we lost him.

and now...John as I remember him, our times together, and his other home: Co.1

John was always in training - this is an early photo of  a LVFC training with our "new" pressure-demand Scott II SCBA - and John "taking a blow" [now they call it REHAB!]

John receives his Firefighter of the Year Award from Fairfax County Fire & Rescue - Out of over 1500 brothers in Fairfax F/R John is Number 1!
We were so proud when LVFC-Co.1 Chief Bob Zoldos and I were present at Chantilly Fire Station when he received his award!
A proud moment for both Leesburg and Fairfax Fire!

John used to come by the Gibson Street F/R office and stop in at Marie's Cafe' in the mornings after a shift or just to hang out - it would be a morning for all of us (Chief Dube', Leroy, Jeff, and me) to sit and enjoy John's company -
then he would stop in my office and John would say " I could be an FM " - Yep - you could be, John - but you were to valuable in what you did. And everyone knew it - and so did you! That's why you were who you were!
And we were so proud to know you!

John was a true "truckie" - especially with a "real truck - the kind that bend in the middle!"  His favorite spot - tillerman - WOW! You really can scare people by driving the tiller end on the wrong side while the front is in the right side of the road!!!

John could be funny any time he wanted! This was Leesburg VFC and it's Womanless Fashion Show back in the late 60's - before John hit the US Army during the same era I served - Vietnam -
Now doesn't John cut a "fine figure of a lady?" Check out those biceps!
(No, he didn't win that night - but we all did - just knowing John!)

This Charcoal sketch by Fairfax Fire Rescue truly captures John as we knew and loved him...
His smile, his trademark mustache, a Master Firefighter in every way - from firefighting, to instructor, to leader, to comrade, to brother, to Dad to all (including the daughters he was so proud of), to Tech Rescue specialist,

well - if you knew John then you know what I mean!
